Colder weather is coming our way and typically that also means the cold and flu season is arriving as well. At Leo Foods we stock an enormous range of herbs and spices that are the essential ingredients of natural flu and cold remedies, as well as acting as preventative measures.

Flu symptoms are most likely to develop within one to three days of you first becoming infected and can last as long as one to two weeks. It can give you a range of different symptoms including a sudden fever or high temperature, a dry or a chesty cough, a headache, the chills, loss of appetite, sneezing, nausea and vomiting and difficulties sleeping.

With so many different symptoms affecting your day to day, the need to both prevent and treat is even more important. So we have some suggestions for you about the tried and tested herbs and spices that will help alleviate the most common cold and flu symptoms.

Let’s start with two herbs.

Oregano

Especially good for a cough. Dr Fratellone, a registered herbalist with the American Herbal Guild says, “Oregano is a powerhouse of flu-fighting properties since it’s antibacterial, antifungal, and an antioxidant, and it can also be used as an expectorant to treat lung or respiratory conditions.” To make an oregano tea: Pour 237ml of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried oregano and let stand for ten minutes. If the taste is too bitter, add some raw honey and aim to drink two cups a day.

Thyme

Thyme is an aromatic herb and is a powerful antimicrobial remedy that works well as a treatment for a spasmodic cough. It can also help the body to sweat out the symptoms. Clinical herbalists suggest making syrup with it by melting organic honey and infusing it with chopped onions, thyme, and/or garlic for three hours. You then strain it and add the resulting syrup to warm water or a tea as a tonic for cold, flu, or cough.

Spices

Spices are well known for their warming properties, which are especially useful for flu and cold symptoms.

Cinnamon

This spice has antifungal and analgesic properties and dilates the blood vessels. A cinnamon tea is effective for treating bronchitis and it is recommended that you take one cup, two or three times daily.

Ginger

Ginger reduces congestion of the lung and it is also a strong antioxidant with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral powers. Slice fresh ginger into slivers and steep it in boiling water for 20 minutes, then drink it like tea, with a spoonful of honey or squeeze of lemon to taste. The honey and lemon will also soothe the throat and help with a cough.

Cloves added to boiling water with honey and lemon is another well-known remedy. At Leo Foods we have all these, plus Superfoods, such as spirulina and matcha powder that will help to safeguard you from getting a cold or flu.
