Celebrating Ramadan in Marbella

Ramadan is a religious holiday for Muslims that is celebrated during the entire ninth month in the Islamic calendar. The exact dates of Ramadan change every year, but this year it will begin on April 23rd and end on May 23rd. It is considered a time for prayer, good deeds and self-improvement in a number of religious and non-religious ways. One of these ways is through food.

Celebrating Ramadan with Food and Drink

With exceptions for those that are too young, too old, ill, pregnant, or travelling, the traditional way to celebrate Ramadan is by not eating or drinking during daylight hours. This fasting is believed to allow Muslims to practice self-discipline and empathy for the unfortunate, both important pillars of the religion. Strict Muslims celebrating Ramadan, then, will only eat two meals daily:  immediately after sunset (Iftar) and immediately before sunrise (Suhoor) each day.

  • Dates: Iftar begins with the eating of dates. This is a religious tradition, not to mention is a nutritious way to break a fast, as dates are an excellent source of fiber, natural sugar, iron and magnesium, all of which are depleted during a day of fasting. We carry a range of dates at our cash and carry warehouse so you can stock up for everyone at your Iftar table!
  • Soups: A soup is traditionally the 2nd plate of the Iftar menu, as it helps to replenish the fluids lost during the day and warms the stomach, making it an easier transition to the heavier foods to come later in the meal. Although every family has their own preferred soups, a traditional Moroccan lentil soup like this one, made with lentils, chickpeas, garlic, caraway, coriander, tomatoes, and olive oil (all available at Leo Foods) is always a good option.
  • Salads: Fresh vegetables are essential during the Iftar meal as they replenish lost nutrients and help aid digestion issues often associated with fasting. They are usually eaten as salads and are delicious topped with a dressing made from olive oil and pomegranate molasses, both available from Leo Foods.
  • Mains & Sides: A variety of main courses and sides, served family-style, are always a part of the Iftar meal. Try making some of these traditional Iftar dishes this Ramadan by picking up the staples such as brown and basmati rice, flatbread flours, cous cous, masalas, tamarind, beans, lentils, chickpeas, pistachios, almonds, cashews, saffron, pickled vegetables, lime juice, pomegranate paste, hummus, tahini, and more from our cash and carry warehouse in Poligono Nueva Campana, Marbella.
  • Desserts: We carry nuts, honey, dates, coconut milk, jackfruit, sultanas, rosewater, and other essentials to make all your favourite desserts this Ramadan. Don’t forget you can also pick up our fresh baklava and choco-dates to help satisfy your sweet tooth this year, too!

Get the flours you need to make hearty flatbreads, foul, bulgur, sesame seeds, and star anise to make faoul mdammas and jreesh, labneh and other cheeses from Leo Foods, the largest Middle Eastern food wholesaler on the coast and beyond.
