Cinco de Mayo

Literally meaning 5th of May, the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo is not, as commonly believed, Mexico’s independence day. Rather, it marks the Mexican victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. An important victory, to be sure, but not one that many Mexicans -beyond Puebla that is, will celebrate. It’s not even a national holiday!

Despite this, outside of Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with celebrating all things Mexican. And just because it’s not a big celebration there doesn’t mean we can’t use it as an excuse to indulge in some tasty Mexican food traditions here, right?
