Sugar Alternatives

Buying Natural Sweeteners in Marbella, Costa del Sol

In 1972, British scientist John Yudkin started the debate about the dangers of sugar, rather than fat, in our diets. For many years his claims were ignored, or described as “loony’, but gradually scientists and the public have come around to his way of thinking about “white and deadly” sugar in our diet.

Some argue that by nature humans have a sweet tooth, because mothers’ breast milk is naturally sweet. Over centuries, sweet products have been prized as luxurious treats, and by the time of the late twentieth century, sugar-containing products had become a massive industry.

Costa del Sol trade customers add natural sweeteners – where to buy!

At Leo International Food Wholesaler and Retailer based in the Poligono Nueva Campana, we track these trends, so that we can stock the products that your customers are likely to ask for, and which may not be widely available elsewhere. We serve restaurants, hotels, beach clubs, bars, cafes and supermarkets all along the Costa del Sol with an unrivalled range of international products, and that includes a range of natural sweeteners.

Fruity natural sweeteners

Natural sugar promotes health. Eating fruit is one way to consume it, or using fruit in a smoothie or breakfast bowl using our Amazonia range of fruit purees and pulps, including raspberry, Fruits of the Forest, mango and passion fruit as well as papaya, guava, pineapple and soursop. We also have a range of frozen fruits that will not only save you from peeling, chopping and cleaning, but will save you huge amounts of money buying out of season fruit.

Raw honey and other natural sweeteners

We also stock the varieties of natural sweeteners that can be added to tea and coffee, or used in baking. Some of them, such as raw honey, date syrup and maple syrup can also be used as dessert toppings, and of course, maple syrup is famously fab with a stack of pancakes. We also stock a very popular ecological agave syrup, and a coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is a good source of potassium, iron and other vitamins. It does have the same amount of carbs and calories as regular sugar, but it has a lower glycaemic index and therefore provides a more stable release of sugar into the blood, thus preventing sugar rushes.

Natural sweeteners in moderation

However even natural sweeteners should be consumed in moderation, as they are still sugar, but they are still a much better alternative than the chemical and highly-processed alternatives.
