Tea, glorious tea!

Leo Foods is a international food wholesaler and retailer, but with our extensive range of teas and other drinks we have in stock, we are also leading drinks wholesalers and retailers too!

The history of tea dates back to ancient China when, according to legend, in 2732 BC, Emperor Shen Nung discovered the brew when leaves from a wild tea bush flew into his pot of boiling water. From that point, Chinese people drank it for its medicinal properties.

Chinese tea can be classified into five distinctive categories: white, green, oolong, black and post-fermented, and they all come form varieties of the Camellia sinensis plant. And if you’re wondering what type of tea most Chinese people drink, the answer is green tea.

Indian teas

British and Irish tea drinkers, perhaps the most enthusiastic consumers worldwide and outdone only by the Chinese and Indians, are accustomed to the teas that originated in India. During British Rule in India, Robert Bruce, a Scotsman, discovered a native variety of the Camellia sinensis plant in Assam in 1823 and thus began the commercial production of tea. Assam remains the largest tea-producing region in India with most of it grown in the Brahmaputra Valley.

Pukka Tea: India’s herbal medicine

The Assam and Darjeeling teas are the most famous of Indian teas, and thanks to Ayurvedic medicine, India has a longstanding tradition of drinking herbal teas for their health benefits, a practice that has increased in Europe. At Leo Foods we have seen an increase in demand for our Pukka range of herbal brands, which include tulsi, mint matcha green, rooibos and honeybush, as well as a host of green tea varieties. The health benefits of tea drinking are now more widely accepted: for example, white and green teas are packed with antioxidants that reduce body toxins caused by pollution.

Yogi tea

We also stock chamomile and tea mixtures for specific uses, such as Revitalise, Night Time and After Dinner. The Yogi tea brand range specialises in medicinal teas, such as Echinacea, Detox, Breathe Deep and Green Energy amongst others.

From Earl Grey to PG Tips

For those tea drinkers who want a more traditional cuppa, we offer the high quality Ahmad Tea brand: customers can choose from Ceylon tea, standard Earl Grey and Aromatic Earl Grey and Cardamom teas. And, yes, we also stock PG Tips, a British store cupboard favourite, as well as English Breakfast tea, a slightly stronger brew.
